Oculus App Content – A New Place For Independent Developers
When it comes to oculus app content, we’re familiar with the Oculus storefront and its strict curation. This is what ensures the quality of experiences and games high and prevents low-quality apps from getting into the gaps. This makes it more difficult for independent developers to make oculus rift game design their VR content on Oculus.
To address this issue, Oculus recently announced a new program called “App Lab” to give independent developers an official place to publish their VR content without going through the rigorous curation process of the Oculus storefront. The App Lab is similar to the traditional Oculus storefront in that you can browse and install apps in the same way you would on a traditional virtual storefront, but it’s not as carefully curated.
If your app performs well in the App Lab the app could be pushed to the official Oculus storefront where it will get more visibility and more attention. However, this isn’t based solely on the number of downloads, but also on things like retention metrics, long-term profitability, the development team, etc.
App Lab is a great method to explore the entire spectrum of Oculus Quest applications. There are lots of exciting games and experiences to play, including well-known nongames like Tilt Brush which turns your headset into a virtual art studio. Quill Theater is a cool VR media app that shows amazing 6DoF animations and movies created by the community.
